Few people are aware that one of the main functions of the National Library is the collection and preservation of rare materials on Singapore’s history. Ong Eng Chuan tells you more.

Raffles Library and Museum: 1874–1955

These include stamps of the Singapore Library (1844–74), Raffles Library (1874–1955), Syonan Library (when Singapore was under Japanese Occupation, 1942–45) and the National Library (1960 onwards). As the Rare Materials Collection is mainly paper based and fragile, it is kept in a special climate controlled room at the National Library Building.
