The founding of two camera clubs in 1921 created more opportunities to exhibit photographs in Malaya. Zhuang Wubin revisits three significant photo exhibitions in prewar Singapore and examines their implications.

Yunnan-Burma Highway Photo Exhibition, 1939–40

These two photos accompany the Chinese article in Nanyang Siang Pau. Top photo: Journalists Chang Ch’u-k’un (second from left) and Chen Geding (extreme right) spent two months reporting on the Yunnan-Burma Highway and took more than 1,000 photographs. Second from the right is Lau Boh-tan (刘牡丹), a representative from the Southseas China Relief Fund Union and Tan Kah Kee’s trusted assistant.
