Initially inspired by the “New Life Movement” in China, couples in Singapore would opt for mass weddings to save money.

The Novelty of Mass Weddings

The marriage certificate of Guo Zhenchuan and Chen Jinyu on the 24th day of the 8th lunar month, 1960. Prior to the Women’s Charter in 1961, which mandated legal marriage registration at the Registry of Marriages, Chinese clan associations solemnised marriages among the Chinese. Mass Weddings Gain Traction

The second mass wedding organised by Singapore Hokkien Huay Kuan in 1956. The clan association organised 17 mass weddings between 1956 and 1960.
