Librarian Lim Tin Seng shares the story of the Civilian War Memorial that commemorates casualties of the Japanese Occupation – and how its symbolism has evolved from inception to the present day.

The Sook Ching Massacre

A Sook Ching Memorial

An Inclusive Memorial

Under a black urn with lion heads in relief is an inscription on the white marble pedestal: “In deep and lasting sorrow this memorial is dedicated in memory of those of our civilians who were killed between February 15, 1942 and August 18, 1945 when the Japanese Armed Forces occupied Singapore.” It is flanked by Malay and Tamil translations.
