The Early History of Printing in Singapore

Printing in Singapore dates back 200 years with the establishment of a press by Christian missionaries. Their efforts to spread the gospel also helped bring the technology here.

Printing by the American Mission

A drawing of the buildings of the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions by Alfred North. The printing works (marked “e” to “l”) consisted of a press room; a room for wetting paper and washing hands; a room for printing accessories; a typesetting room that could accommodate 50 compositors; storerooms for books, paper and boxes; a book binding room; a type cutting room where punches and matrices were made; and a foundry for casting and finishing type. Lithography in Malay Printing
